What are you using to check for errors?  The best way is to read the
numbers directly from /proc/net/dev, as other programs (netstat and
ifconfig) omit some errors when presenting their summary.

You should see collisions in normal duplex mode, and no collisions in
full duplex mode.

Use 'mii-diag' to check the negotiated speed and duplex -- especially to
check that autonegotiation did occur.

Don't forget obvious physical problems: mispaired cables are common
problem sources.
