Although your kernel might list ppp or slip at start unless you bring dial and inturn bring the interface up then ppp0 won't exist! I've never taken the X route. I've always use pppsetup (on slackware this is) from the command line to setup my PPP connection, then used ppp-go & ppp-off to start and stop my dialup connection.
