While I havn't played with ISDN I am assuming that its just seen another
modem so the only thing I can think of is are you ever telling it to
dial?  Although your kernel might list ppp or slip at start unless you
bring dial and inturn bring the interface up then ppp0 won't exist!

I've never taken the X route.  I've always use pppsetup (on slackware
this is) from the command line to setup my PPP connection, then used
ppp-go & ppp-off to start and stop my dialup connection.
