I have a 3c905C (not a CX) and have done a network install of Debian with it using the RedHat kernel and modules. RedHat 7.0 has a working 3c90x module. The card does not work with the 3c59x (no data transfer, even after reading up everything at scyld.com). The 3Com site does have some patches at their site for the 2.0.36 and 2.2.5. Hunting the debian lists showed that you can patch up the 2.2.x kernels using the 2.2.5 patch. I did that and it works. But while transferring data (typically 1GB over a 100Mbps line) the machine starts to crawl after some time. Have not checked with the 2.4 though.
