OK: nss_wins is so that the Linux box can refer to Windows boxes by
their NetBIOS ("Network Neighborhood") names.

To allow the Windows boxes to refer to the Linux box by name, you need
to ensure that nmbd is running (or will be run by inetd as required),
and that smb.conf is configured correctly (I'm not going to begin to
discuss what "correctly" means for your particular setup).

It also requires that the hosts are configured to use TCP/IP (i.e.
TCP/IP is bound to the "Client for Microsoft Networks" in the Network
properties). If the hosts only use IPX (or, worse still, NetBEUI),
then (AFAIK) you're stuffed; Samba only talks TCP/IP.
