They do work. There are drivers by 3com: http://support.3com.com/infodeli/tools/nic/linux.htm although those are listed only supporting 2.2 kernels. The 3c59x driver at 2.4.0-test10 seems to list at least some 3c980 model, and Donald Becker's lattest driver seems to list the same. (http://www.scyld.com/) Comparing what 3c59x.c driver has at Linux, and what Donald has at its 3c59x.c, the latter will very likely support the necessary 1504 byte physical MTU, while current Linux contained driver does not.
