It is hard to help without more information - how much memory does the
system have (RAM and SWAP), how many programs are running on the system,
and exactly what command you entered.  Also, did you give the command as a
user, or as root?

What happened is that you mannaged to use all the memory.  Did you notice
a lot od disk activity before you got the error messages?  Please post the
the list the output of the free command.
