Probably what you are looking for is information on the following.

pptp: Point=to-Point Tunneling Protocol
vpn:  Virtual Private Networks

While I don't know of any links off the top of my head, the above information
will help narrow down your search, as they are the name of the technology that
can provide the services you need.
