Yes, you are correct in that it did work in the out-of-kerne
em28xx-new driver.  No developer has had any interest in making it
work in the mainline (and I'm too busy with other things to do it,
especially since I don't have the hardware).

I'm not arguing that it cannot be made to work - just that I know for
sure it doesn't work now and no developers are planning on working on
it a this time.
