whence "vmlinux.o"?

  it seems that, recently, a regular build now builds and leaves in
the top-level directory a "vmlinux.o" file, in addition to the final
"vmlinux".  i'm pretty sure this didn't used to happen.  is this
deliberate?  just curious.
