Okay, I missed these as well:

shambhala:/etc> grep -A 3 "Sched" sysctl.conf
# Scheduler-Tuning
kernel.sched_latency_ns = 5000000
kernel.sched_min_granularity_ns = 100000
kernel.sched_wakeup_granularity_ns = 100000

Its confusing that some scheduler settings are in /sys and some are in 
/proc ;).

Ingo, might these have an impact on the issues seen? I can undo them.
