Yeah, I think that it's the most straightforward. We have one value to represent one item, the length of command. We can access to rq->cmd and rq->cmd_len as before. I don't see how it's is dangerous to have a single value to represent the length of command though changing rq->cmd from the static array to a pointer to support large commands is tricky.
