Rescue question

Hi,

I have a notebook on which the hard disk has died - it won't boot and makes
funny noises. I am hoping to copy as much data of the dead disk as possible.

I have successfully used the SuSE linux installation DVD - booting the rescue
system then mounting the dead disk and an external USB disk and copying
valuable data across - in a similar situation in the past.

But this time it hangs on the point of loading the ata_piix module.

Could I prevent this module from loading? Is there some other trick I can
try?

I accept that the disk may be so dead as to not be possible to rescue any
data.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

David.
