There is hotplug support, atleast my disconnects doesn´t kill my
machine, mythtvbackend needs a restart though. Before the hotplug
support  I where lucky if my guardian script where able to reboot the
machine before it hang.

That's a lame excuse, specially considering Linux DVB has been worked on for at least 4 years, and there were attempts to refactor things left and right.

 

4 years is PLENTY of time to properly support "device removal". There was at least 1 USB device in 2003/4, the Hauppauge Dec2000-t.
