IMHO, the only correct way to scan for channels is: - get an authoritative list of frequencies (I have compiled a list from various sources which is included below. 2 channels have been moved by 1MHz to line things up a bit better. I have included both the old and the new frequencies in my list). This will change 'from time to time' but probably not for another few years - scan each frequency for a signal. Use AUTO where possible. Rely on the hardware to scan the +/-125kHz. If the hardware does not support any of these then you must try each one in turn. If a signal is found, it is normally locked in < 1 second so doing a full scan it not a problem. scan/dvbscan is slow and takes ~4min but I have written my own which does a full scan in ~1min - any TS which is found can be read to get the transmitter info and perhaps info about other transmitters. Don't trust this data however because nothing is forcing it to be correct. If you can read the TS then you have the tune data already (this may well be contrary to 'The receiver should check the Transmission Parameter Signaling' but I don't exactly know what that statement means) The only thing you can't control is the polarity. This is a hardware issue because your antenna must be oriented in the correct way. Normally all channels in a region have the same polarity so this should not be a problem. Where possible, the digital channels are allocated in such a way that your existing analog antenna will work fine for digital. It is the ACMA which controls all of this. It can be hard to find but there is a lot of documentation available. Manually maintaining a list of transmitters would be almost impossible. Here is a list of ABC transmitters in VIC alone (46 digital transmitters). http://abc.net.au/reception/freq/vic.htm For a complete list view http://www.acma.gov.au/webwr/_assets/main/lib100059/broadcasttransmitterexcel.zip or http://www.acma.gov.au/WEB/STANDARD//pc=PC_9150 Note that these lists don't have any digital specific details. I don't think reporting the COFDM parameters is required. That probably does not clear anything up but perhaps it will help to define some new requirements. I hope to be release my dvb tools soon so perhaps a widespread survey could be done.... John.
