File '/usr/src/linux/README' lists several configuration commands
like

"make silentoldconfig"
    ...avoids cluttering the screen
    with questions already answered.

or

"make allmodconfig"
    Create a ./.config file by setting symbol
    values to 'm' as much as possible.

Is that what you are looking for? Once you set your desired firmware
options they should silently migrate into the new kernel config.
