i tried this approach and usb tuner is now detected. hal says:

CX23880/1/2/3 PCI Video and Audio Decoder (cap=unknown, driver=cx8800)
    Video Device /dev/video1 (cap=video4linux)
    Video Device /dev/vbi1 (cap=video4linux)
CX23880/1/2/3 PCI Video and Audio Decoder [MPEG Port] (cap=unknown)

  Bluebird
    DVB Device /dev/dvb/adapter0/net0 (cap=dvb)
    DVB Device /dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0 (cap=dvb)
    DVB Device /dev/dvb/adapter0/dvr0 (cap=dvb)
    DVB Device /dev/dvb/adapter0/demux0 (cap=dvb)
USB Vendor Specific Interface (cap=unknown, driver=dvb_usb_cxusb)

the /dev/dvb entries in the bluebird section above is all i
have in /dev/dvb. so where's the pci tuner?

what should i be expecting to see?

the bad news is that even though i run "make xconfig" in
the v4l-dvb drectory to only compile what i thought i
needed, it went and compiled and installed all the modules
it could. how do i tell it to only make and install what was
configured?
