I got this working in the end by... hacking the Makefiles - not an elegant solution by any means.. I'm guessing the OSS 'aci.h' doesn't exist on the system since Ubuntu is very focused on ALSA and it wouldn't surprise me if they've taken all OSS code out of the distro..
