An update! No sooner had I sent that last message asking everyone to write, I found new mail in my inbox from the friendly guy at AverMedia saying that the "glue layer" sounds like a good suggestion, he'll forward it it the Linux devs in Taiwan, and he'll be back in touch shortly! Score!
