"someone complains" nowadays usually comes with a huge
fee for some lawyer. Back in the days where Convergence
hosted the server it didn't matter much, but ever since
the server went private I had a bad feeling about this.

It would be cool if someone would offer some download
space on a different server. I'd like to get rid of
firmware binaries on linuxtv.org altogether
(except when we get a written permission from the
copyright holders to redistribute the files.)

Otherwise get_dvb_firmware is the way to go: Grab
firmwares from the hardware vendor's download sites.
