As you quote you are running Debian Linux please have a look at:
http://www.puuhis.net/htpc/

There is a full step by step description on how to compile a custom
kernel of your own.

There is no way around that in my opinion, as you need to have the
compiled kernel sources (usually in /usr/src) to be able to use any
patches or video4linux archives from linuxtv.org.

So first thing to do is compile a kernel to your needs....
