Nowhere is the word salary or pay mentioned, though developers are sometimes funded for their work or their employers pay them to do it. You are not alone, many people don't understand OpenSource, that includes significant sections of the software industry, the few, like IBM caught the clue-train early and got on board, while Sun keeps blowing hot and cold, whereas Microsoft is clued-in, but just throws rocks and insults.
