Doesn't the software provide some kind of email verification, i.e.
one has to provide a valid mail address and reply to a mail message
before he can modify pages? Like subscription to a ml.

Spam is obvious and can be removed. I fear that sooner or later someone
will apply less obvious modifications which cannot be detected easily.

Oops, I assumed that an administrator could simply perform a rollback...
Otherwise I would have removed this crap immediately.
