IIUC you don't need the proprietary driver. Assumed you should need it, then NVIDIA is better than ATI, since ATI's proprietary drivers only work for a few versions of X and they drop older cards for drivers that work with latest versions of X. NIVIDA's proprietary driver supports old cards with latest X versions.
