IIUC you don't need the proprietary driver. Assumed you should need it,
then NVIDIA is better than ATI, since ATI's proprietary drivers only
work for a few versions of X and they drop older cards for drivers that
work with latest versions of X. NIVIDA's proprietary driver supports old
cards with latest X versions. If you just need the FLOSS driver, in my
experiences both, the radeon and the nouveau have good 3D support for
usage with Google-Earth, but for using GNOME3/Cinnamon at least my
cards are too slow.
