I was using jackd2. I've now tried jackd1 which works without the
problem. Maybe something to do with dbus?

I spoke too soon. Same error with jackd1, just takes sometime to start.
The qjackctl messages are different multiple
delay of 29465.000 usecs exceeds estimated spare time of 5224.000;
restart ...
Going to try kxstudio livedvd to see if it happens there.

KXstudio worked which should rule out hardware.
Interestingly going back to Debian, after a couple of KX sessions, the
problem disappeared for 2 days.
