It has always been the same with any other idea that mankind ever came up with and will always be the same. Some will butcher them. Some will transform them into a new gem, but almost always standing on the shoulders of the giants that came before them. That's the condition of human progress. Unless we introduce the total police/thought state.. And whether one's name is attached to it or not is completely meaningless in the long run, for human lifetime is short compared to mankind's.
