You can add an instrument, then go to layers and in the upper layer just add a sample.
Very easy. These days I do use Hydrogen more than just a drum machine. You can load
wav files.
There is also a python script to quickly create hydrogen kits from a directory of samples. There may be other versions but I think this is it:
