Hi Dave,
  Set the path to the VST by exporting the $VST_PATH environment
variable. Then, fire up Renoise. Go to Edit -> Preferences, then down
to the Plugins menu (the bottom-most menu IIRC), and enable VSTs.

  You may have to turn the bottom panel on (View -> Show Lower Frame),
but there should be a tab down there that says Instruments Settings.
There'll be a pulldown with every VST if they're enabled.
