If the xruns do happen in regular time intervals, your problem might be

are not periodic, but they happen randomly but with enough frequency
that anyone would notice them. they occur at close to zero system
load.

Which is the non-rt that works for you with nouveau?
rt-land is stuck for now in ancient 2.6.33.x kernels...
