Possibly the text on ardour.org/download_full should be edited from "If you are an active developer of Ardour, or a beta[sic] tester..." to something more like Paul's stronger statement above.
...or better yet, replace it with a link to the 'getting involved' section of the development page, then in the 'welcome' message of the ardour-dev mailing list, mention the requirement to also join the ardour-commit list, and in that list's welcome message, finally give the link to the svn checkout command.
...maybe then you'll have fewer distractions from drive-by construction-zone gawkers, as well as lower levels of 'buzz' and anticipation of the pleasures to come. It's a balancing act. To what extent are the developers motivated by the public attention of that 'buzz', balanced by the distractions of the occasional less-than-fully-formed bug report, and the drawn-out meta-discussions such as this one?
