install the 32 bit version of my distro (Debian) on my 64 bit machine?
I'm assuming that would give me access to all 32 bit software. It
would also be a performance hit, correct?

Running a 64-bit OS has noticeable performance improvements in processing audio (especially encoding/decoding) and in compiling source code (C/C++).

Other than that, most folks don't notice any performance difference between 32/64-bit modes.
