Do you need sample accurate sync, or does a synchronous start suffice? To sync-start, the pragmatic simple way is to just send an OSC message to all applications involved. ..or you can have a look at hdsync/ivysync on dyne.org. For accurate sync: Netjack (comes with JACK) allows to sync multiple machines (via ethernet) using JACK-transport. AFAIK VLC can only be started/stopped via remote-ctrl but does not provide for external sync. You could use xjadeo.sf.net for that.
