if different versions of JACK do not share an ABI (at least, the core
API) then there is a mistake on the part of JACK developers and/or

goes". if it exists, its a bug and its needs to be fixed, ASAP.

The debian-multimedia effort to put both into debian will help find these bugs, and probably help to solve them too. Then having both interchangeable in debian should make sure any incompatibilities that creep in get picked up fairly quickly. Probably it will be after Squeeze, but it should be in Sid fairly soon by the sounds of the mailing list, it seemed like quite an effort to get this far.
