I use a script called youtube-dl to get videos from youtube:

There's also a Firefox plugin called Download Helper that works very well with YouTube and a number of other similar sites.

They can be viewed with vlc or mplayer (no flash player installed).

Yup. And I have mplayer playing through JACK, so the audio goes through by USB sound card instead of the laptop's old HDA audio. Much nicer experience!
