? what i meant is: drive your rig in ambisonics, and pan the 5.1 signal 
as follows:

L   -30°
C     0°
R    30°
SL -110°
SR  110

(using ardour as a mixer, five mono buses with an ambi panner in each, 
and an ambi master bus.)

then you can do all kinds of funny things, regardless of how many 
speakers you have and where they are.
individual volume controls included.
and if the hole in the rear makes you uneasy, create some rear-center 
signal from SL and SR, maybe with a little delay, allpass and reverb... 
(never tried it, though.)
