Would a better way to approach this to be to develop a web app for
hosting music, which people can then install on their own sites?
Currently I've cobbled something together on my own using Wordpress and
a Flash-based streaming applet, but something like an open-source
equivalent of bandcamp.com that's easy to set up and use, and which
could potentially even use HTML5 for streaming, could be very cool.

I've been working on something like this. it's at http://github.com/pipemanmusic/Django-Krupa. I've lost interest a bit but could be convinced to revive it if anyone is interested.
