That's not correct. There is a USB 2.0 Audio/Midi specification. Vendors
just don't develop their devices according to the

Well, there is a german company MARIAN, which is doing audio interfaces.
They have a USB interface and a bunch of
PCI interfaces including an ADAT only card.

On their webpage they state, that they are willing to give all necessary
information to write drivers to developers of oter OSes.
