Congrats on solving this :)
The reason why this is so is because either 1) Flash uses oss, hence aoss on systems that no longer come with the oss stack, or 2) Flash uses alsa but skips/does not recognize dmix. Wine uses dmix, which has been alsa's default ever since .15 IIRC; you don't need to configure dmix.
And I'm pretty sure we all want dmix. Without it, we wouldn't be able to play multiple sounds at once in an alsa-only environment.
From kernel .29 though, the alsa subsystem for the intel hda (or the other way around) has changed for the better. Now I have only a Master, PCM, Headphone and Speakers.
