Aha, that must be it! It would work if I'd manually connect the synth to the ecasound instance.

So -i jack,clientname will not actually connect to the client. -i jack_auto,clientname will.

I will try jack_multi. I'm using 2.4.6.1-2 of Ecasound, but an old onlline tutorial to generate the command lines.
