I don't know if the problem lies in the application or the underlyinglibraries most use.My guess is that video players are more likely to work, so I'd try withxine, mplayer, gstreamer and the likes and see if one of them works. The only way to get this fixed is to file bug reports or featurerequests and contact the developers directly to discuss the issue athand, else no-one will bother to implement it. It's a similar problem with video players and jack support, pretty muchall support jack but in a manner that is it pretty muchuseless. No-one will fix a problem he is not aware of.
