Bear in mind that ART preamps usually run their single tube "voltage starved" killing headroom/freq response. I haven't looked at the specs but I bet that they also choose the wrong tube if they did go for 12AX7s since 12AU7s sound much better at lower plate voltages. You can ask any tube guru you know about that, I am sure he'll confirm what I am saying. I wasn't aware of those issues until I started building tube amps myself and experimenting with different supply voltages.
