Yes, I agree trying to fix windows can be quite a chore, a clean install

is preferable. Once you have it fixed I would recommend backing it up
with acronis or clonezilla. I get very tired of fixing XP but it is
handy to have around for various reasons. Making restorable images has
saved me hours of work.
