if you use Ubuntu 7.10, you don't have to compile anything, you just 
install "linux-rt":

I believe that any popular distro has their own rt-kernel for installing.
I like it that way - you just install rt-kernel, jackd, qsynth and 
rosegarden and start playing...

But if you really want make your own kernel you might want to read this too:
