Oops! Looks like the absence of the IPGA in ALSA 1.0.13 is no bug, but a
feature! Doubtful feature indeed, but nevertheless documented:
Changelog between 1.0.12 and 1.0.13 releases
********************************************
+ AK4XXX AD/DA converters
- ak4xxx - Remove bogus IPGA controls
- Fix volume control for the AK4358 DAC
There's a thread in alsa-devel concerning this subject:

I would report it to the alsa-guys and Jaroslav in particular. You could
tell him, that you made it run with 2.6.18, because I already told him it ran
upto 2.6.16.2 and stopped with 2.6.20.
Please do so... I've told the alsa-user list, that it didn't work for quite
a while and noone from the developers answered.
Kindest regards
Julien
