A bit debian specific, but should prove useful.

I'd advise you to start from the .config of your running kernel, otherwise it's gonna be a long journey.

I have two weeks until the end of the semester and lots of music
to do, but I'd still like to use Linux for it.

Since this is your first time, I wouldn't bet my money having your own kernel *and* doing much work on it in two weeks. There are always small things that needs fixing...
