Well I've got it down that the hum only happens when phantom power is
switched on... Or, more precisely, that it is a LOT louder then. It is
the same hum I've been having with Jack for ages, only softer than on my
internal sound card. It happens as soon as I start jack and stops when I
stop jack and is louder the less latency there is.

Apart from the ground loop problem the other thing I can image is that you hear you hardware 'sing'. For example, I can hear the interrupts fired from the ohci1394 card when I start a stream.

WTF??? How odd. Dying to get a solution, it's been plaguing me for
years. Note: It does get softer when I used an adapter to remove
grounding of the notebook, but it's still there. How odd.

Don't think its odd. You seem to suffer from ground loops.

Thanks again, Daniel!

no problemo.

PS: You don't happen to know whether the Apogee Ensemble could be run
using freebob? If so, I am eager to test.

According the the schema the Apogee Ensemble has a DM1500 inside. I'm almost sure that there is a BeBoB running. And if Apogee has not removed the AV/C model it should be running fine with freebob. Hmm, thinking about Apogee they are closely tight to Apple. This means the device has almost for sure a working AV/C model inside. But to be sure someone has to test it first.

cheers,
daniel
