My computer had a barely audible whine when KDE started, but when I
started JACK, it would quit.  As soon as I stopped JACK, the whine
came back.  I finally discovered that if I disabled KDE's normal sound
daemon, the whine went away.

I still have no clue what was whining, since it would do this even
with no speakers connected.
