Agreed, but extending just a bit, most likely you can load 32-bit binaries under a 32-bit chroot running on a 64-bit host. I don't *think* there is a reason to completely avoid a 64-bit platform for this reason but as I said earlier, if I was doing all over again with the info I have today I think I would have gone 32-bit and had a much easier time of it. The chroot is not fun to keep up to date and not trivial to interface with when apps are running in the 64-bit environment. (2 Jack servers, for instance...) I was interested in Jack's response about more registers available to the compiler when running 64-bit. Since Gentoo is 100% compiled that might be a reason to lean toward 64-bit if you were going to go Gentoo. (which I doubt in your case Dave...) With other binary distros it would be less compelling.
