could we use that or a variant?

Yes, the term "netlabel" already has some currency, but I'm not so happy with it.

Here's why:

* I'm discovering that almost every artist who made a release through a netlabel consider it just as a starting point to gain some kind of fame and recognition hoping to release a conventional cd for a *real* non-net label.

* Most successful netlabels and their artist already have that "I'm too busy to answer your emails" attitude. I could have lived happily without this kind of people. Don't want to be perceived as a part of this scene, for sure.

* A netlabel and the people who run it are still unnecessary middlemen, albeit of a newer kind.

* If an artist gives his work to a netlabel, one of the reasons is what Carlo described before as the need to have somebody else judge the quality of his work. It's some kind of certification a true independent artist could do without.

Obviously I'm not talking about all netlabels and every artist featured there, but most of them.
