Gack, it sounds like not one of these apps supports ALSA correctly.  Are
you saying they all have free-form text entry fields to select the
device?

They should just have a dialog box where you can select hw or plughw or
dmix or whatever and another to select the sound card to use.

I think that both a text entry field and a drop down menu (like in qjackctl) is the best solution. It's frustrating when the parameter you need is not included in the menu choices. If there's just one, the entry field is better, IMHO.
