Beware, the current SBLive "24-bit" uses a different chipset. It works with ALSA, but it has no hardware synth and thus no reason to exist.

Does anyone know whether they still make the emu10k1-based SBLive at all?
Don't know about that, but there's a bunch on eBay selling for cheap.

Chaz'll still need that adapter though. Probably costs more than the card.

For that matter, an M-Audio 2496 can be used (and has a decent MIDI interface), in conjunction with Fluidsynth. The 2496 cards are only $99 these days.
